Gold Watch
There are many golden plants available these days. Golden Hops suckers everywhere and grows fast, for good competition with grass below and the Giant Miscanthus it climbs on. Golden Ninebark is a bright-leaved bush and as an added bonus, flowers, too. A good contrast of colored Smoke trees(Cotinus).

Colorful trees are common here in fall. Black Gum always has a good red fall color. Japanese White Birch(Betula platyphylla) can have good fall color.
