The Heartnut is a beautiful nut that fits right at home on Valentine’s Day. The nut is easy to crack and remove from the shell. Too bad most of my trees have dieback from harsh winters.

Butternuts
It was a good year for the Butternut(Juglans cinerea). The tree produced a lot of nuts and winter is a good time to crack them.
Bumper Crop Acorns
A Bur Oak tree in the goat pasture has produced a lot of acorns. The goats have enjoyed eating them. Some have fallen over the fence in the corn field, where the goats can not reach them.
Wooly Worm
I found a lot of weird insects feeding on a Heartnut tree. They are known as Butternut Wooly Worms and are larvae of a sawfly.
Late Season Harvest
Carrots are dug up before the ground freezes. Need to still get off the hulls of the big Black Walnut harvest.
Chestnut Flowering
My Hybrid Chestnut tree has been full of flowers this summer. Since there is no other Chestnut flowering near this tree, it will not produce nuts.
Mature Ohio Buckeye
This is an old Ohio Buckeye(Aesculus glabra). The buckeye produces a lot of nuts, though not edible for my consumption.
Chestnut Hackberry Smiley Face
Chestnut Brain
I like the pattern on Chestnuts.
Shagbark Hickory Nuts
Shagbark Hickory(Carya ovata) nuts are small. But the nuts can be in plentiful supply in the fall and taste great.
