Filazel Change of Seasons

Filazels can show up in fall with color. In a few years these bushes should bear large quantities of nuts.

Popcorn Shrub

Yellowhorn is a tall shrub that is also known as Popcorn Shrub because of the flowers. This plant can produce edible nuts.

Fall Ritual

Picking up Black Walnuts in the fall is a messy, but fun experience.

Yellowhorn Seedpods

My young Yellowhorn bushes flowered this year and started to develop seedpods. Also known as the Popcorn Shrub because of how the flowers look.

Yellowhorn Flowering

The Yellowhorn(Xanthoceras sorbifolium) has started flowering at a young size and age. The end result should be edible nuts.  Pretty good for an ornamental flowering shrub.

Late Season Harvest

Carrots are dug up before the ground freezes. Need to still get off the hulls of the big Black Walnut harvest.

Hybrid Chestnut

We have had Hybrid Chestnut trees for awhile.  They have produced chestnuts sometimes. The problem is these are lacking complete hardiness in this location.  They needed a better microclimate.

Different Walnuts

I got some nuts of three different Juglans species that I will be planting this spring.   I think squirrels wouldn’t mind a few more nut trees growing. From Left to Right: Juglans mandshurica, Juglans hindsii, Juglans cathayensis

Heartnut

There are a few Heartnuts(Juglans ailantifolia) growing here, but the seed source I think is not very hardy.  There has been dieback multiple times and only 4 out of 5 are currently alive.   This year was the first year that a nut was finally produced. You can see how it got the name Heartnut.
